Educational Excellence Grants
Educational Excellence Grants Will Re-Open November 2018
ESDF provides $30,000 annually for educators to bridge the gap between their funding and what programs they are wanting to implement in their classroom. Educators are encouraged to write a need-based grant request that will provide supplemental funds for materials and other educational tools. These grants are resources for educators to assist with many subjects such as reading, writing, mathematics and science.
Why do we offer Educational Grants?
As schools face shrinking state budgets, the Foundation is called upon to help bridge the gap for many basic education needs. The foundation then takes many of its funding cues from the needs teachers express in their Educational Excellence Grant applications. The ESDF’s grants are funded by various fundraisers conducted throughout the year along with donations from generous individuals as well as local and worldwide corporations here in the SW Washington and Portland areas. The annual Gala provides the majority of the necessary funds for grant the requests. The Foundation is again funding their Educational Excellence Grant program with $30,000 for the 2016-2017 school year.
Where does the money go?
As of November 2016, 33 elementary school grant requests totaling $23,712, 13 middle school grant requests totaling $20,989 and 9 high school requests totaling $15,910 were received. That makes the total grant requests for the 2016-2017 year at $60,610! Although we would love to grant each request, the committee now has the arduous task of reviewing, granting, and/or helping teachers find the necessary funds for their ideas and programs. There are times when a teacher or school may have to pursue additional funding other than through the Foundation. For example, the school’s parent groups (PTO or Boosters), local businesses, or other civic organizations will, in fact, provide additional funds for a project.
What can be done to help fund the grants?
Because the need is so great there are many times that we just simply cannot fund the request. This is why members of the ESDF are constantly working to find new sources of revenue. Whether it is the Gala in March, employee matched giving programs, or simply clicking the donate button on the Home Page, together we can create a legacy of education for our children and teachers!
